Pholiota multifolia (Pk.) Smith & Hesler syn. Gymnopilus multifolius (Pk.) Murr. Cap 5-8cm across, convex with an incurved margin, becoming flatter with a broad umbo; brilliant yellow becoming more tawny or orange-redish, sometimes paler on the margin; smooth, dry, and sometimes faintly hairy from veil remnants. Gills adnexed, crowded, narrow, with notched edges; similar color to cap or paler, becoming spotted or stained rusty brown or orange-brown when bruised. Stem 30-70 x 4-l0mm, solid, tough, sometimes slightly enlarged at the base; yellow; woolly or hairy becoming nearly smooth. Veil yellowish, hairy; soon disappearing. Flesh fairly thick in big specimens; pale to bright yellow, becoming dirty rusty brown where bruised. Odor slight. Taste bitter. Spores ovoid to ellipsoid, smooth, 6.5-9 x 4.5-5µ.. Deposit brownish rust. No caulocystidia; clamp connections present. Habitat on logs, sawdust, and decaying wood of deciduous trees. Found in eastern North America. Season June-October. Not edible. |
